Welcome to
Peel Forest Homestay

We’re Steve and Jenny Deans, your hosts at Peel Forest Homestay.Jenny and Steve have lived in the area together for 35 years, raising their family and farming our small block that is adjacent to the forest.
Steve grew up here in the farmhouse, the son of noted landscape painter Austen Deans.
In our home we host all kinds of visitors, from backpackers exploring the rugged landscapes to seniors wanting a quiet getaway. Our rooms cater for all budgets, and we like to make all visitors feel that they very much have a home away from home.

Our Accommodation

Experience life on the farm

Our accommodation inside the house is on the top floor, with wonderful views out to native bush and the prominent peak of Little Mount Peel. Upstairs you’ll find a single and double room, as well as a large balcony that is also furnished with beds for a unique outside sleeping experience if the weather suits! We also have a seven-berth bunk room with its own separate bathroom across from the house, ideal for backpackers, small groups or clubs. We once had a working sheep and cattle farm but have now reduced to a lifestyle block with a few sheep, beef cattle and hens, so during your visit you’ll have a chance to experience rural life. We may have ponies to give your kids a ride on.

Bellbird Room

The bellbird room is our largest room on the top floor of the house. With lots of windows, this queen room is lovely and bright, and has views over bush to the east.

Fantail Room

Our single room is perfect for the individual traveler, with an expansive view over the paddocks, towards the bush and Little Mount Peel in the distance.

Bunk Room

Our bunk room sleeps up to 7 people (five single bunks, one double) and is ideal for those who want self-catering accommodation or those who are looking for a budget friendly bed and breakfast option.

Discover Peel Forest

Just a couple of hours from Christchurch lies the tranquil village of Peel Forest and its wonderful native bush. It’s a place to get away from it all and where you can wake up to the stillness of the forest and the sound of birdsong.
Bounded by the Rangitata River to the East and the Little Mount Peel to the West, Peel Forest is a remnant of a what once was a huge swathe of podocarp forest on the foothills of the Southern Alps. The 773 hectare scenic reserve park is a home to a multitude of fauna and flora. Native birds such a kereru, bellbirds, tomtits, robins, rifleman and warblers can be seen in the forest, and sometimes you may even spot the odd karearea (native falcon) above the bushline. Majestic and ancient kahikatea, totara and matai dominate the bush, but you can also find a wealth of ferns, tree fuchsia and other broadleaf shrubs under the canopy.
